Also included are freezers, smokers and crab pots for catching Dungeness and Tanner crabs. The cabins range in size from one bedroom which will sleep three to four to the extra large Eagles’ Roost cabin which will sleep up to ten. These cabins are perfect for large groups. We can accommodate up to twenty-five at one time. The town of Thorne Bay has about 500 residents and can be accessed by a short, 30 minute floatplane flight from Ketchikan. Alaska Airlines serves Ketchikan with flights from Seattle, 680 miles away. If you want to see more of the island you can take the Inter-Island Ferry from Ketchikan and rent a car in Hollis and drive to Thorne Bay. Our cabins are accessible by road, but a 4WD is recommended. Thorne Bay and Alaska’s Inside Passage are home to trophy-class, saltwater fishing located throughout its waters. You can enjoy fishing in relatively calm waters. The area is comprised of hundreds of islands, protected passages and bays, teeming with fish and other aquatic life. While fishing, don’t be surprised to see Orcas, Humpback Whales, Otters and Sea Lions. Alaskan Escape provides each cabin with a 16 foot Lund skiff for a self-guided fishing experience or we can recommend local guides. Our Lunds are fully equipped with Penn Downriggers along with rods and reels for saltwater fishing. Prince of Wales Island is the third largest island in the United States. At 140 miles long by 45 miles wide, only Hawaii and Kodiak Islands are bigger. With 990 miles of shoreline, is it any wonder that fishing is the major tourist attraction? The climate is temperate, being influenced by the Japanese current. Prince of Wales Island gets an average of 120 inches of rain per year. The summer temperatures range from 50° to 80°, so plan on wearing lots of layers. Waterproof, breathable fabrics are ideal. Rain can come at any time, so if you have a favorite rainwear set, bring it. Alaskan Escape does have a limited assortment of rainwear we can loan out. Daylight on the longest day of the year in June is about 15 ½ hours, also known as fishing time. Wildlife is not limited to the sea around you. Expect to see Sitka black-tailed deer in the area and don’t be surprised to see Black Bear. The island also supports several packs of wolves. Bald eagles are a common sight, as are blue heron, kingfishers, cormorants, ducks and geese. Even the tiny hummingbird makes the trip all the way from Mexico each summer. Tongass National Forest – Most of Prince of Wales Island is in the largest national forest in the United States. It is nearly 17 million acres and spans 500 miles from the southern tip of Prince of Wales Island to near Glacier Bay. Cabins and Rates Eagles’ Roost – 2 bedroom/2 bath, sleeps up to 10. Guest Comments “Thanks so much for the vacation of a lifetime and for sharing your lovely piece of paradise with us. The fishing was superb…the cabin and facilities were excellent, great freezers, smokers…and sitting on the lanai…and watching the deer on the island, the otters and seals on the waters, eagles in the sky was the most peaceful experience. We feel as if we’re leaving with a new found sensation for life and memorable moments with new friends. These days at Alaskan Escape will be in our hears forever…” Wayne and Lone, Kona HI “Colorado guys visit was great. Rustic nature, do-it-yourself fun was way beyond our expectations. Plenty of adventure which let us escape. Highlight for us was catching silvers (10-14 lbs.) on fly fishing poles using the downrigger, and the Dungeness crab feast on our last night. Hope to see you next year and bring along our families to see this beautiful country and experience your Alaskan Escape.” Joe, Boulder, CO Special Destination Fish Discount Call and book for 2009 before May 1, 2009 and receive a 20% discount.
