An Apt Student

In 1990 I met Stu Apte quite accidentally while fishing the Gallatin River in Montana. I didn’t know him from Adam as we talked on and on about fly fishing. When I mentioned I was new to the area, he offered all sorts of information about the best ways to catch rainbow trout and the best flies to use.

After watching me cast, he even mentioned some tips that improved my distance and accuracy. We shook hands and went our separate ways, but years later I saw him on TV shows and realized I’d met a very accomplished and well-known fisherman. Since then I’ve bought his videos and read magazine articles he’s written. That’s why it was such a pleasant surprise to see Stu’s name and picture when I bought a copy of Destination Fish. Stu’s not only a legend as an angler but someone I’ll always remember as willing to share his knowledge with me, and I hope you will pass on my regards.

Editor’s Note: Thanks Manny, Stu indeed wrote about his long-standing world records (“Legendary Encounters”) in the last edition, and he also serves on Destination Fish’s distinguished Advisory Board.
