I’ve never fished the Pacific Ocean off Guatemala, although the article about that (“Tease ‘Em In Iztapa”) makes it plain I should one of these days. However, what I’ve done that has also been very rewarding involves first enjoying a fishing trip to Belize, and then taking the short flight from Belize City to neighboring Guatemala City for a couple of days.

However, what I’ve done that has also been very rewarding involves first enjoying a fishing trip to Belize, and then taking the short flight from Belize City to neighboring Guatemala City for a couple of days. While the great offshore action understandably gets all the attention, not many people know that the freshwater fishing is also excellent. My wife and I pass through very charming and picturesque villages on the way to seldom-seen Mayan ruins, and we also fish in the many beautiful rivers for snook, tarpon, bass, shad, carp and catfish. We always see a few yellow-tailed quetzals, howler monkeys and lots of other unique animals without all the crowds of people usually encountered in most other countries.
