I noted in the article about fishing in Hawaii (“Hook-Up in Hawaii”) how the action is still going strong around those islands. I can vouch for that, especially off Kona. Anyone thinking of a trip there should know that you’re into the marlin fishing almost as soon as the boat clears the main charter boat marina in Kona because of the quick drop-off to deep water. On my last visit a big blue marlin rose into our lure spread no more than 20 minutes after casting off at the dock. With the volcanoes blocking the brunt of the winds off Kona, it’s usually smooth waters for miles offshore, which means even smaller boats can get after the big fish. What I like best of all is that with the fishing grounds so close, there’s little wasted running time. I’ve been to some places where it takes over an hour before even getting the lines wet. In a week we released four blues between 200 and 400 pounds and caught seven wahoo, lots of tuna and dolphin, and the greatest joy – my first spearfish.
