Garden State Catch

Destination Fish New Jersey is blessed with many natural wonders: 127 miles of picturesque Atlantic coastline, 1,792 miles of tidal shoreline, scenic snow-covered mountaintops, and thousands of acres of open space and farmland. Perhaps nothing, however, embodies the serene and the adventurous – not to mention the convenience – more than the state’s allure as an ideal, world-renowned fishing venue.

Regardless of season or preference, the abundance of riches that lie within such a small geographic region will satisfy the needs of the most experienced, seasoned and demanding anglers. For freshwater enthusiasts, more than 4,000 lakes, ponds, rivers, and reservoirs are mere minutes away from the northern reaches of Sussex to the southern-most areas of Cape May, and all points in between. Great trout fishing is a trademark year-round in New Jersey, with brook, brown, and rainbow trout ever present within streams, ponds and lakes statewide. Similarly, thanks to one of the nation’s most effective stocking programs, anglers have an incredibly diverse and abundant variety of species to pique every interest: largemouth and smallmouth bass, striped bass, carp, walleye, white and yellow perch, varieties of catfish, carp, sunfish, northern pike, chain pickerel and more.

For saltwater fishermen, the choices are equally abundant, and why so many residents and visitors alike enjoy the seas off New Jersey’s eastern coastline each year. In fact, according to the Recreational Fishing Alliance, over 1.4 million anglers participate in marine trips and related charters annually. Moreover, summer and early fall are the ideal seasons to indulge one’s love of the sea, whether your preference is surf, bays or the deep blue. From July through October, virtually all of the more sought after species can be found in abundance. Those fishing off the shore will find bluefish, fluke, whiting, striped bass, and weakfish to name a few. Anglers who frequent New Jersey’s bays may find themselves reeling in summer flounder, spot and croaker, among others. The state’s bays and tidal waters are also renowned for their clams and crabs, a reputation sustained since early colonial America.

Destination Fish There are also boundless adventures awaiting discovery in the deep sea. From the northern-most reaches of Sandy Hook down to Cape May and circling southward into the Delaware Bay, New Jersey’s seaside towns are brimming with opportunities to enjoy a charter for smaller groups or a party boat for larger gatherings. Whatever your preference, the high seas off the Jersey coast are well known for their variety, with catches of marlin, shark, tuna, bonito, sea bass, cod and many more.

What makes New Jersey one the most attractive fishing venues in the entire northeast and what fuels the industry’s ongoing success is what it offers anglers as a complement to their fishing holiday. No matter where one decides to spend time, it is impossible to not be drawn to another, fabulous venue minutes away. In this regard, New Jersey is unrivaled. Whether enjoying the nightlife, historic, cultural and performing arts venues or other attractions, a fishing holiday only welcomes further exploration of the diverse array of entertainment. How can one better a day of deep-sea fishing than docking amid the lights and excitement of Atlantic City – or anywhere up and down the legendary Jersey Shore? Likewise, it’s hard to imagine a more ideal family-oriented fishing vacation that coincides with a visit to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, the Camden Aquarium, Mountain Creek Waterpark, or countless other historical, concert, and sporting venues that have long defined every region of the Garden State.

Whatever your experience as an angler, New Jersey is proud to offer something to exceed any and all expectations. And now it is as easy as ever to research, plan and book your fishing getaway anywhere in the Garden State. One visit to the newly enhanced www.visitnj.org website allows you to access a list of fishing locations and related venues as well as nearby, unrelated attractions by county and/or interest.

Last year anglers enjoyed over 7.4 million recreational fishing trips throughout the state. For those fishermen, the attractiveness of New Jersey as a fishing venue is well known. For those yet to discover the ideal Garden State getaway, we invite you to experience what makes New Jersey such an attractive and unforgettable draw for anglers, and why they return to the state’s streams, lakes, ponds, reservoirs, rivers and coastlines year after year.
