Freshwater Fishery – the Karluk The
world famous Karluk River is Kodiak’s largest and most productive
river. Located a short 10 minute flight by float plane from Kodiak
Legends Lodge, the 22-mile Karluk is famous for its world class salmon
and steelhead runs, ranking in the top Alaskan fishing rivers. The
shallow waters of the Karluk make it one of the rare places you can
sight-cast to salmon and steelhead in knee-deep water.
Few rivers have the diversity and productivity of the
Karluk River, which has monster runs of Chinook, Coho, and Sockeye
Salmon, as well as the largest population of steelhead on the Island,
with runs averaging between 4 and 8 thousand fish. Add Dolly Varden and
rainbow trout and it’s easy to see how the Karluk is a fisherman’s
dream!
The most popular and productive way of fishing the
Karluk is floating the 13 mile stretch via raft. Our experienced guides
will direct you to the best fishing holes in the Karluk, where you will
experience the thrill of hooking into a majestic King Salmon or a
bright Steelhead trout. The floatplane will then pick you up from the
Karluk lagoon, where you can almost always see Kodiak brown bears
wandering the riverbanks in search for salmon.
The Karluk is probably most famous for fly-fishing,
for its smooth banks, clear waters and shallow, soft running water that
make it wade-able and ideal for casting a fly.
Saltwater Uyak Bay – Directly in
front of Kodiak Legends Lodge lies Uyak Bay, a large fjord that almost
bisects Kodiak Island. Uyak Bay is known for its abundant marine life
including whales, seals, otters, waterfowl, and most importantly, BIG
FISH. Uyak Bay is best known as the home to one of the largest and most
diverse fish populations in the world. Depending on the time of year,
one can catch many different types of fish ranging from all 5 species
of salmon, halibut, ling-cod, yellow-eye, and even sharks. It is not
uncommon to catch 5+ different species of game fish a day!
